In this blog I am going to explore a concept I simply love called the ripple effect. The name references a stone dropping or skimming into water and you can see how the water ripples from its initial impact.

The ripple effect is a fascinating concept that while basic, can have a fundamentally profound impact on your life. It is the idea that your actions impact not only your own life, but that of others and can have a larger scale impact on the world. This sounds rather daunting, but it can be a hugely inspirational boost. As by doing smaller things for others such as random acts of kindness, making time for others or doing voluntary work, can have a great impact.

Knowing this can give you a bigger sense of purpose. This positive energy can not only make you feel good about your contribution but genuinely can make a difference to those around you. This in turn spreads from them onwards to a greater influence. It is a beautiful idea and one that I think more attention should be paid. As if we can create great ripple effects, it is amazing to think of the impact for the good we all can have. And in a world in which we can at time feel rather powerless, this feeling is powerful.

Examples of the ripple effect can be both small and large in scale.A small example is simply smiling at a stranger in the street. This may improve their mood and in turn impact how they interact with others for the rest of the day. Bigger examples include how one person speaking out on a subject can lead to a bigger movement such as the #metoomovement as a recent example.

You can also find examples in other areas like nature. One is that Wolves were re-integrated into an area which impacted the deer population. The deer had been overgrazing causing a limitation on local vegetation which has a knock on effect to other species. Introducing wolves limited the deer population and this helped keep the local ecosystem in a better balance. This shows how much a ecosystem relies on different components working in harmony and one change had a great effect.

Religions have ideas that link into the ripple effect. Buddhism as one example, through its concept of Karma, values the effect a person can have greatly. Because Buddhism believes in reincarnation, longer term impacts are valued highly as they, themselves, will inherit the earth that this current generation leaves behind. This focuses the importance of things such as environmental impact as well as social. This longer term thinking impacts choice making in rather a different way from traditional Western short term thinking.

Doing positive things for others can have a positive effects on ourselves. This happens on many levels such as biological as the brain releases chemicals that make us feel good. It works on a social level, as we are social creatures having stronger bonds with others is an important need. It also on a individual level can give us a clear sense of purpose, make ourselves feel of value and can shift our thoughts to other things. Noticing these responses can help keep these in habit as you will want to get the reward for the behaviour.

What do you do to create ripple effects in your life? Maybe listing some or drawing a diagram about how they could be impacting others could be insightful.

Also spend some time thinking about any new ripple effects you would like to create. Let me know on my socials what ideas you have, I would love to hear them.
